Design of workholding & fixturing is key to effective utilization of machine tools. Basics of fixture design if not implemented correctly results in poor productivity & quality problems. Set-up time and cycle time reduction, increased accuracy on components, deskilling the job setting operation are the obvious advantages of a good fixture. Competence in workholding & fixturing differentiates excellent organizations.

Keeping this in view, Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association (IMTMA) organized a 2 day seminar on Design of Workholding & Fixturing on 19 - 20 May 2016 at Gurgaon.

The Program was conducted by a Former Asst. General Manager, Machine Design & Business Development, Tata Motors Machine tools division, Pune. Mr. Gupta is an industry expert with over 37 years of rich experience in Design & Development of General purpose Machine & SPMs.

Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) is a structured method of defining and establishing the steps necessary to ensure that a product meets customer specifications leading to customer satisfaction. APQP, if deployed by the team with complete understanding and an eye on the future, can be a very effective tool in an organization ensuring on time delivery of a quality product at the lowest cost. Apart from meeting the timelines and product / process quality which are commonly known targets, APQP can be used as an effective feeder for Knowledge Management in the organization.

The programme was conducted by Mr. Ved Parkash, an industry expert with over 37 years of domain expertise in automotive industries. He is former Head - Quality & TQM at Ashok Leyland and Head - Quality at Hero Honda Motors. He has a rich experience in Gear manufacturing as well as Gear metrology.

Mr. Ved Parkash has done a pioneering work at Hero Honda to reduce Gear Noise, establish distortion patterns during Heat treatment. He is a Mechanical Engineer and has been associated with well-known organizations in the country manufacturing 2 wheeler & 4 wheelers viz. Escorts, Eicher, LML, Hero Honda & Ashok Leyland.

The Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing systems have been getting evolved over the last 20 plus years continuously. Globalization in various streams of engineering has been instrumental in defining the details and implementation . ASME has revised and improvised the definitions in the last release of year 2009 with examples in which almost all the readers find their own parallels.

However, thorough understanding is a must across the design, manufacturing and quality personnel for implementing GD&T and realizing the true benefits in terms of interchangeability, reduced cost, reduced re work, simplified inspection & gauging etc. Keeping this in view, Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association (IMTMA) organized a 2 day programme on "Advanced concepts of GD&T " on 21 - 22 July 2016 at Noida.


The programme focused on :

  • Distinguish about using tolerances at RFS, MMC and LMC conditions with practical applications.
  • Go through revisions as per ASME 2009 version
  • Understand advanced concepts viz. composite position and profile tolerancing
  • Learn Functional Gauge design for GD&T parameters
  • Gain a practical insight into inspection of GD&T features using conventional methods, Co-ordinate Measuring Machine and functional gauges

This programme was conducted by Mr. M. Krishnamoorthy, Senior Director - IMTMA Technology Centre who has over 25+ years of experience in the area of high precision CNC machining, CAD/CAM as well as Technical Training. He has imparted specialised training in GD & T for more than 500 engineering professionals from industries across India and has trained more than 4000 industry professionals & students in CNC and CAD/CAM domains.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy has completed Senior Level GDTP certification by ASME USA and is a certified ASME GDTP Senior Professional. He has undergone advanced training in GD&T from ASME at Seattle, USA.

Product Validation using FEA/FEM Application

Industries are faced with challenges on product design and development, including demands on lower cost of ownership by customers, superior performance and faster time to market and erosion in profit margins. Enhancing product value in terms of functionality has never been more important. The product development starts with conceptual design and goes through various stages viz. detailed design, prototype manufacturing, testing, modification, production and introduction in to market.

From the stage of detailed design to releasing the product in market consumes most of the time in product development. Ultimately the product is proven in the field when it is subjected to the operational conditions. Product testing can simulate many site conditions but this is highly time consuming and costly. The advances in the Finite Element Analysis plays a big role in this stage. The FEA can help validation of the product by simulating loading and site conditions. If done in proper manner, simulation can reduce the product development time and cost many fold. Thus FEA has become the mainstay of engineering design and development to accelerate new product development. Practical methods to implement FEA as a part of the Design Validation Process needs emphasis with a proven approach addressing real-world situations.
