Design of Fixtures Specialization
The six-day training program on Design of Fixtures Specialization was conducted in Gurgaon by IMTMA Design Institute from February 13-18.
The course was structured with introduction to Fixture Design basics to final design. Design of fixture is key to effective utilization of machine tools. Basics of fixture design if not implemented correctly results in poor productivity & quality problems. Set-up time and cycle time reduction, increased accuracy on components, deskilling the job setting operation are the obvious advantages of a good fixture. Competence in right fixture differentiates excellent organizations.
During the six days, a complete process of fixture design was carried out from concept to finish design. Pre-design activities like design input, conceptualization, process planning, accuracy consideration, cycle time estimation, POKAYOKE, 3D modeling of parts and assembly, using popular design CAD tools and preparing the final manufacturing drawings. Design for Accuracy, Manufacturing and Assembly will be addressed during the course. Defects Analysis of Paint & Powder Coating Applications
In today's manufacturing scenario, where shortage of raw material, power and increasing pressure to reduce costs are the order of the day, 'Painting / Coating application' is possibly the most troubled issue. While we are nearly at par with global standards in metal working, we definitely lack in finishing and Powder Coating Applications operations. The stark difference is visible when it comes to exporting our goods. Lack of knowledge in Defect Analysis especially in painting / powder coating and Buck passing between paint or powder suppliers versus equipment suppliers lead to high rework and rejection rates. Keeping this in view, Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association (IMTMA) organized a 2 day programme on Defects Analysis of Paint & Powder Coating Applications on 22 - 23 September 2016 at Gurgaon.
The programme focused on :
- Paint Film Defects, Root Causes and Remedies
- Basics of Paints / Coatings
- Types & Importance of Pretreatment before Paint / Coatings applications & their types
- Basics of Paint / Coatings Spray Applications, Paint Spray Techniques
- Paint Application Techniques, How to improve the transfer efficiency
- Quality Control / Quality Assurance
- Shelf life, storage and safety aspects
- Disposal of paints and media
- How to read the specifications
- Case studies from engineering industries
- Group discussion and presentation
The programme was conducted by Mr. Meghan Manjrekar, Industry expert in Surface Coating & Application Technology. Mr. Manjrekar is a Qualified Paint Technologist & has over 30 years of experience in the domain. He is a certified International Coating Inspector – SSPC (USA) PCI Level 2. As a Consultant, he has an impressive list of Customers with OEMs & MNCs on his list. He has been in the Training domain in the subject for over 10 years & has delivered special courses as well as, in-house courses for industry in India & Abroad.
The programme was highly interactive and participants were able to solicit guidance on specific technical issues from the expert faculty. Delegates from BHEL, ColorJet India, ERDA, FIAT Chrysler Automobiles, Fluid Logic Systems, Hydac India, Knorr-Bremse India, Lohia Corp, Mahle Filter Systems India, Minda Kyoraku, MKU, TI Cycles of India, Varpar International, Varroc Engineering, Varroc Polymers & WILO Mather & Platt Pumps attended the training programme.

Training Programme on
Design of Fixture – Specialization
The Design of Fixture – Specialization was conducted from 17 to 22 October 2016, at the BIEC Bangalore.
Jigs and Fixtures are the economical means to produce repetitive works / components by incorporating special work holding & tool guiding devices. Since the machine and its movements are fully under CNC control, the machine repeats the position of tool on the component. Job is programmed as per component drawing and no guidance is required as opposed to jig in drilling machine.
Hence Design of fixture being a key to effective utilization of machine tools, basics of fixture design if not implemented correctly results in poor productivity & quality problems. Set-up time and cycle time reduction, increased accuracy on components, deskilling the job setting operation are the obvious advantages of a good fixture.
The program included a session by Mr. SK Gupta, an industry design expert, on the basics of fixture design, design considerations for fixture design, necessity of fixture, types of fixture, design calculations for cutting forces, clamping forces and diamond pin etc.
On the second day, delegates were trained on SOLIDWORKS part modelling and assembly modelling so that they can work on real time fixture design exercise.
On the third and fourth day, Mr. Deepak Ravilla, Manager, Fixture division, Kennametal, carried out a complete process of fixture design from concept to finish design. Pre-design activities like design input, conceptualization, process planning, accuracy consideration, cycle time estimation, POKAYOKE, 3D modeling of parts and assembly, It was a highly interactive and hands on training session which covered complete fixture design aspects and a visit to Widma for a practical exposure on machining fixtures.
On the final day, Mr. Avinash Khare, Head of Pune IMTMA Tech center, gave an introduction and conceptualization to BIW, assembly, welding and inspection fixtures along with case studies.
On the last day the delegates visited Bosch industry to get in an insight on Assemble, Welding and Inspection fixtures.
